This collection contains correspondence, notes, reminiscences, and other materials about Harry T. Stephens and his family. The correspondence gives information about their activities in the Topeka, Kan., area and elsewhere. It covers 3 generations of the family and provides insight into the activities of an insurance agent, a torpedo bomber pilot in World War II, and soldiers in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. The Civil War correspondence is between Thomas; his brother, James; and their father, John. Thomas also wrote his reminiscences about service during the Civil War. Paul Ramsey Stephens was a torpedo bomber pilot during World War II, and some of the correspondence is related to his service and death in the Pacific Theater. The collection also contains some business correspondence, some genealogical information & notes collected by Frank Fletcher Stephens, miscellaneous material about the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, and assorted deeds & documents. Harry's diaries are included. The 1899, 1902, and 1903 diaries describe his activities at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan.; at Kansas State Agricultural College (now Kansas State University) in Manhattan; and after he returned to Topeka. His business journals (1909-1941) deal with his work as a state agent for the Insurance Company of North America including his travels and expenses. Also included are 6 v. of "Sunday letters," 1923-1952, to his sisters, Carrie and Mary, in which Stephen discusses immediate & extended family matters, Methodist Church activities, some business matters, and events in general. These letters trace the activities of his immediate family as the children grew to adulthood.
